If I ask who are the popular social networking sites in China? I think most of you will talk about Kaixin001.com, QQ, 51.com and Xiaonei.com. However, since yesterday, there is no Xiaonei.com anymore, Joe Chen, CEO of Oak Pacific changed its domain from Xiaonei.com to RenRen.com.

But why changing the already well-known Xiaonei.com brand to Renren.com (brief history of Renren below)? Some people think it is because Xiaonei means “in campus” in Chinese, which limited its users bases on university and college users. By changing its name to Renren, which means “everyone” in Chinese, can help to promote to white collar users, this market is now dominated by Kaixin001.com. That’s why there is also rumor that Joe Chen plans to merge all three SNS sites under Oak Pacific, i.e. Xiaonei, MOP and Kaixin.com, into Renren.com. But they denied the rumor. If so, they already have Kaixin.com which compete head-to-head with Kaixin001.com on white collar users, why bother to change the name of Xiaonei. After Xiaonei changed name and strategy, will there be another site who can dominate the university and college users SNS market? Will it be QQ Xiaoyou? Renren.com actually is not a new site, which was founded in 1999 and was a quite high-profile website during the Internet Bubble, it went bankruptcy in 2001. Joe Chen bought Renren.com domain name in 2005. Joe Chen relaunched RenRen.com as an online classified site in 2006, but it was shut down again in 2007.

Kaixin001 Has Ads on Apps http://www.cwrblog.net/1231/kaixin001-has-ads-on-apps.html

Kaixin001.com, the hottest name in China’s SNS sector, has started to monetize its traffic by adding ads into its extremely popular social game apps. Parking war is one of the most popular social games in Kaixin001, now you can buy a brand-new Buick Regal car in the game. Unlike other cars, it is a “sponsored car” with a detailed description, and clicking “more” will lead you to Buick Regal’s website. Besides Parking War, Kaixin001.com also launched a game related to real estates, so it is not surprised that you will find real estate ads in this game some day, and cars and real estates are two most important online ads in China. Many social networking sites is experimenting various advertising formats, it seems that display ads does not work very well on SNS, while the effects of engagement ads are better. What Kaixin001.com did is trying to make ads one of the element of the game, users will not only read it, more important, they play with it. Though we still have no idea about the its ROI, it is a good initiative of engagement ads in social media. Based on Alexa, Kaixin001.com’s traffic has exceeded Xiaonei.com, and one of my friends who knows the industry very well also confirmed it. Its hard-to-remember domain name did not become an obstacle to its rapid growth, even though Oak Pacific Interactive, the holding company of Xiaonei.com, bought the domain Kaixin.com, and operated a site almost identical to Kaixin001.com under the same Chinese name.

Xiaonei Integrates Payment System Into App Platform http://www.cwrblog.net/1208/xiaonei-integrates-payment-system-into-app-platform.html

Xiaonei, the leading Facebook-copycat in China, announced today that it has started to allow third-party apps to integrate Xiaonei’s online payment system, i.e. Xiaonei Dou, to monetize the traffics. What is Xiaonei Dou? It is the virtual coin of Xiaonei.com, you can use Alipay, Yeepay, mobile phone or pre-paid card to pay for Xiaonei Dou, then you can use Xiaonei Dou to pay for services on Xiaonei.com. Now apps developers can develop apps to try to charge users and make money. When Xiaonei rolled out its developer platform, it was criticized by many developers for its not-so-open policy, but it became more and more developer-friendly, for instance, in August, it changed policy to allow developers to have online ads in apps. Now the new Xiaonei Dou payment system offers new way for developers to make money, it’s good for whole eco-system. Currently, there are about 800 third-party apps on Xiaonei’s platform. Actually, it is not the first developer platform to integrate virtual coin system. On Oct 20th, 51.com also announced developers on its platform can use 51 coin in apps. The system is there already, the widget developers now need to focus on product, to think out how they can ask users to pay for it.
