Last year, many China’s social networking sites have embraced open platform ideas, including leading player such as Xiaonei and 51.com. After several months operation, you may want to know the development of the apps on these platform. Anti Opensocial? http://www.cwrblog.net/1235/anti-opensocial.html

Today, some of my friends is twittering a new website called Anti-opensocial.com. The site said, “Not real open but just cheat, this is OpenSocial in China. We think Google could do better than just support fake Open Platform. Could OpenSocial do something really useful to help these surviving third party developers?!”. Why they boycott Opensocial in China? That’s because 51.com just announced that in next 6 months, 51.com will develop several kinds of apps inhouse, all of them are very popular apps such as friends for sale, parking war, pet raising. This actually makes it impossible for third-party developers to develop and monetize similar apps on 51.com’s platform, which is unacceptable to app developers. Since 51.com is a close partner of Google’s Opensocial in China, they ask developers to boycott the coming Opensocial Hackathon in Beijing and Shanghai(check out this event calendar), and want to appeal to Google not to be with evil partners. Actually, 51.com’s announcement also tell the situation of open developer platform in China. Many China’s open platforms are not really open, they are not building an healthy eco-system. They not only want to be a platform to take advantage of third-party apps, they also intend to be app developers who own all the most popular apps, and take the biggest benefit from the apps. If there is no healthy ecosystem, what can you expect from an open platform?

Xiaonei Integrates Payment System Into App Platform http://www.cwrblog.net/1208/xiaonei-integrates-payment-system-into-app-platform.html

Xiaonei, the leading Facebook-copycat in China, announced today that it has started to allow third-party apps to integrate Xiaonei’s online payment system, i.e. Xiaonei Dou, to monetize the traffics. What is Xiaonei Dou? It is the virtual coin of Xiaonei.com, you can use Alipay, Yeepay, mobile phone or pre-paid card to pay for Xiaonei Dou, then you can use Xiaonei Dou to pay for services on Xiaonei.com. Now apps developers can develop apps to try to charge users and make money. When Xiaonei rolled out its developer platform, it was criticized by many developers for its not-so-open policy, but it became more and more developer-friendly, for instance, in August, it changed policy to allow developers to have online ads in apps. Now the new Xiaonei Dou payment system offers new way for developers to make money, it’s good for whole eco-system. Currently, there are about 800 third-party apps on Xiaonei’s platform. Actually, it is not the first developer platform to integrate virtual coin system. On Oct 20th, 51.com also announced developers on its platform can use 51 coin in apps. The system is there already, the widget developers now need to focus on product, to think out how they can ask users to pay for it.
